Chapter 17

I snort. “Of course it is. Fairy dust?”

“No, you better save that in case Cain’s there.”

I swallow hard. “I won’t leave without Darius,” I tell her sharply.

Her lips curl into a wry smile. “But you’ll leave me behind.”

“You can handle your transportation without me.”

“Only if I’m conscious,” she murmurs.

She quickly packs up only a few of the items from the coffee table, and I eye the black marks on the map. Darius’ journey has taken him all over the world. I wonder who he’s talked to, what he’s learned. He never gave me a lot of details whenever he’s called. Lately, he had been texting, and I got the feeling he didn’t want to risk talking. Now, I want nothing more than to hear his voice one last time.

No! I shouldn’t think like that. He’s fine. I mean, if he’s in the Door to Hell, there’s no way he’ll have cell reception there. There’s no need for me to fret.

“Are you ready?” Mirella asks gently.

I shake my head, hold up a finger, and race to my weapon supply. There are always more places where I can stash another dagger or gun. None of these will affect Cain. Nothing so rudimentary will kill or even harm Cain, but there’s no telling what else might be lurking around a place with such a dark, twisted name.

Even now, I’m still not ready, but I return to Mirella. I’m not even sure how she transports us, but within the blink of an eye, we’ve left my house behind and stand on a barren landscape.

There’s the crackling of fire behind us, and I whirl around to see a massive crater. All around us is a massive desert, and then there’s this sinkhole covered in flames. The air above the fire is all distorted, and the heat blasting from it feels unnatural.

“How are we supposed to get down there?” I ask Mirella.

She hands me a potion. “Rub that onto your clothes and then dump this onto your hair and rub into your face and any exposed area not covered by clothes.”

I do as she says. The substance is more like a salve than a liquid, and it's almost tar-like too. It smells just as bad, but the more I rub it into my clothes and skin, the less it smells until the stench is entirely gone.

“You must have been a Girl Scout,” I joke.

Mirella blinks a few times and just shakes her head. “One last thing. I think it’s safe to assume it’s burning off gas, and those gases might not be safe to breathe. Drink this.”

She hands me a vial. I drink it, grimacing at the bitter aftertaste.

“I’ll go first,” the witch says.

“No. That’s my job.”

I swallow hard and stare at the shifting sand near our feet. There’s no sign of footprints, of course. Even though there’s no wind to speak of, the heat from the fire, the flickering nature of the flames, and even just our presence is causing the sand to move. There’s no hint of life anywhere near here, no sign that Darius had been here.
